Comunications Information

Detailed below are the various means of communication among staff members on Babylon 5. Please note that it is essential that the correct codes be used at all times. Any abuse of these services can lead to disciplinary action. Links
These are the hand-worn "PowerBooks" and communication devices giving voice only connections to the BabCom network. Each link holds several terabytes of personal and/or work related information. Broadcast frequency is assigned automatically by the central computer. Operation is by voice command or by touch sensor (tapping the link). A voice mail service is available. Security staff members will be issued a link as a part of basic training. Each link is encrypted with a personal molecular code. The link gives access to central computer facilities as well as Security areas within the station. Your link is your lifeline. With it you can be located anywhere in-sation. BabCom
BabCom is the station's own communications network. A Galactel Matrix forms the internal central communications network of Babylon 5 and handles in-station, ship-to-shore, and ship-to-ship communications as well as links into StellarCom. BabCom carries 1,000 communication and educational channels. There are 2,300 monitors and viewscreens located throughout the station for public and private access. StellarCom
StellarCom provides communications channels to all other systems within broadcast range of a jumpgate. Channels are assigned on a priority basis. For business and personal rates, check CenCom. Gold Channel
Misuse of gold channel - "Don't. Not even if your father is dying." - MG
This is the highest priority com-channel and is for official military use only. Access is via diplomatic card or security ient. Public use is limited to extreme emergencies, when all other com-channels are nonoperational. Moitoring use of Gold Channels to prevent misuse is essential to security. Monitoring content of Gold Channels is illegal, a branch of the Political Privacy Act of 2132, and therefore punishable by military court-martial. Personal Communication
In a personal emergency communication may be arranged at the discretion of your immediate superior. Long-Range Communications
Long-Range communications are effected via faster-than-light tachyon communicators. Ships emerging from hyperspace will notice a momentary loss of signal due to energy flux surrounding the jump point. Data Crystals
Data crystals are information storage and transport media used by most major races. Data crystals are available from a wide variety of sources. The main supplier is the Minbari race.Minbari crystals are individually coded via "Clay-RNA" to provide security and prevent counterfeiting. Data crystals are of uniform size - fifty gigabytes - although the actual information size is dependant on the type of scanning medium.
